Nikki Giovanni was a famous African American poet that was born on June 7th, 1943 in Knoxville, Tennsesee. Nikki grew up in a pretty racial childhood. This inspired Nikki to write more and more. Most of her poems have to do with raciality and how she overcame it. She is still alive and is still wrighting.
I have read a good amount of this poets poems and I have to say this poet has exclusive wrighting and a lot of deep had level words. All these words lead to a very deep meaning and a moral that goes straight to the heart. One of the deep and emotional things I'm talking about is the way she talks in the "kidnap poem" down below, and even if I know its all metaphors it is still crazy to talk about kidnaping someone and jumping them.
:
CHOICES if i can't do what i want to do then my job is to not do what i don't want to do it's not the same thing but it's the best i can do if i can't have what i want . . . then my job is to want what i've got and be satisfied that at least there is something more to want since i can't go where i need to go . . . then i must . . . go where the signs point through always understanding parallel movement isn't lateral when i can't express what i really feel i practice feeling what i can express and none of it is equal i know but that's why mankind alone among the animals learns to cry
this is my favorite poem because it reminds me what do do and think at times. It also reminds me of what my dad said. The first five lines is the motto my dad stands by. He says my job is to not to do what I want to do because me and my family on my dad's side tend to go to extreme with our games and ideas. Everytime we want something my dad says appretiate what we have and that is what lines 9-18 says.
kidnap poem
ever been kidnapped
by a poet
if i were a poet
i'd kidnap you
put you in my phrases and meter
you to jones beach
or maybe coney island
or maybe just to my house
lyric you in lilacs
dash you in the rain
blend into the beach
to complement my see
play the lyre for you
ode you with my love song
anything to win you
wrap you in the red Black green
show you off to mama
yeah if i were a poet i'd kid
nap you
This poem is another one of many poems Nikki made. Nikki is not only the author but narriator of this poem. She is talking to the people that read this poem and that is the audience. This poet uses many deep emotions and metaphors like when she says she will put us in her ryhmes, phrases or meter. She must have deep emotions if she says she will kidnap us or mabey I don't know what she really means.
